Meet BSKL’s new Principal: Ms Vanessa Jane Whay

Incoming BSKL Principal Ms Vanessa Jane Whay has big shoes to fill. But she is more than up to the task, bringing tonnes of leadership experience and expertise into the fray.
Following the departure of Dr Mike O’Connor after four years of leadership at BSKL, Ms Whay said she attempts to strike a balance between Dr O’Connor’s legacy and her own values-driven, visual leadership.
“I believe that outstanding schools are defined not only by academic success, but by the strength of their relationships, the quality of their teaching and the ambition they inspire in every learner,” she said, adding that her leadership brings together academic rigour, exceptional pastoral care, innovation, and a culture of continuous improvement to ensure that every child is challenged, supported, and empowered to fulfil their potential.
Before joining BSKL, Ms Whay is an internationally respected educational leader with over 25 years’ experience leading high-performing British international schools across the Middle East, Central America, Europe and Asia. She is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and has successfully led both established and founding schools, combining strategic vision with a deep commitment to educational excellence, innovation, and student well-being.
In addition, Ms Whay serves as Vice Chair of the Association of British Schools Overseas (AoBSO) and is an experienced British Schools Overseas (BSO) Inspector. These appointments reflect her recognised expertise in school improvement, governance, safeguarding, curriculum development, and international accreditation.
Central to her educational philosophy is the belief that every student deserves a personalised and ambitious learning journey. She champions an education that develops intellectual curiosity, creativity, resilience, and character alongside outstanding academic achievement. By nurturing confident, compassionate and globally minded young people, she prepares students not only for success in examinations and university, but for meaningful lives of purpose and contribution in an increasingly interconnected world.
This philosophy drives her to start and build new British schools overseas, namely King’s College Panama and Durham School for Girls in Doha, Qatar.
A passionate advocate for partnership, Vanessa believes that the strongest schools are built through collaboration between students, families, staff and the wider community. She is committed to creating inclusive environments where everyone is known, valued and inspired to achieve their very best.
“My leadership reflects the belief that when people flourish, schools flourish,” she said.
She added that her short-term goals for BSKL are to develop the community and reputation of the school and its success further by raising academic rigour, enhancing communication and partnership with families, strengthening BSKL’s reputation as Malaysia’s school of choice and ensuring every student thrives through belonging, well-being and inclusion.
“My long-term goal is to drive for success in the vision and mission of the school,” she said.
She states that her vision is to shape a generation of creative and resilient global citizens who will change the world for the better, and her mission is to be the most forward-thinking, technology-enabled educators in the world, using global reach and world-class teachers to create a unique learning experience.
Looking to the future, Ms Whay remains committed to shaping schools that are recognised for educational excellence, innovation and integrity. She is passionate about developing exceptional teachers, inspiring courageous learners, and ensuring that every decision is guided by a simple principle: placing children at the heart of everything the school does.
