Visiting professionals praise high-calibre Year 8 Sustainable Architecture projects

As part of the Key Stage 3 Technology curriculum, Year 8 students explore Sustainable Architecture through a project-based learning topic that blends design, science, and social impact.
This project challenged students to consider the needs of families living in the Khlong Toei community and to develop architectural and spatial design proposals informed by their learning in materials, construction, and environmental science.
Beyond technical skills, students were encouraged to empathise with the social and economic realities that shape people's lives. Their solutions reflected not only creativity and design knowledge but also compassion and contextual awareness, hallmarks of meaningful service learning.

The value of project-based learning
At St Andrews, project-based learning is a teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects. We aim to develop projects that emulate real-world challenges and scenarios, allowing students to find creative solutions and strengthen their creative skills.
To deepen the experience, a panel of distinguished professionals joined the class for project presentations, including:

The experts listened to student proposals, offered constructive feedback, and shared perspectives on design and community-centred problem-solving, drawing on their professional experience.

Students' understanding is deepened by authentic feedback
Mr Tam expressed his appreciation for one group’s meticulous attention to detail, particularly from the user’s perspective, while Mr Vin commended the students’ technical drawing and CAD skills, noting how effectively they used design communication to explain their ideas. Several physical models were singled out as excellent demonstrations of spatial concepts translated into accurate scale, showing the students’ ability to bridge abstract ideas with tangible reality. The students themselves reflected on the experience with pride, emphasising how presenting to professionals encouraged them to articulate their ideas more formally and confidently.
Reflecting on the project, Ms Arunima, Technology teacher, commented, “Seeing professionals share work that mirrors their own projects provides a powerful real-world relevance to students. It validates that the skills they are learning are the actual tools used to solve global problems. Also, interacting with industry experts forces a shift from teacher-student classroom talk to formal design justification. They are required to explain their work in a comprehensive, formal way, thus honing essential communication skills needed in the future.”
This project on Sustainable Architecture exemplifies how service learning and professional engagement can transform classroom lessons into experiences that inspire empathy, sharpen technical skills, and prepare students for the future.
