How Student Voice and Leadership Come to Life at Dover Court

When families gathered for the Dover Court Association (DCA) Welcome Back Family Picnic earlier this term, they enjoyed an afternoon filled with activities, entertainment and opportunities to connect as a community. One the highlights was the student-led Expressive Arts Show, coordinated by Dover Court International School Year 9 student Daksh, which brought together performers from across the school and provided a platform for students to share their talents.
While the performances were a highlight for families attending the picnic, the showcase also reflected something central to the Dover Court experience: students are encouraged to take ownership of their ideas, pursue their passions and develop the confidence to lead both in and beyond the classroom.
Turning an Idea into Reality
What began as an opportunity to perform soon became something much bigger for Daksh. Stepping into a leadership role, he helped shape the event from start to finish, coordinating performers, organising rehearsals, writing scripts and ensuring the show ran smoothly on the day.
"I've always enjoyed music and expressive arts, but I felt there wasn't really an opportunity for students to showcase their individual talents in a proper performance," said Daksh. "I've also always been someone who enjoys organising things and bringing ideas together."

Inspired by the chance to create a platform for others, Daksh worked closely with students and staff to help turn the idea into a successful showcase.
"Once I got involved, I really enjoyed the organising side of it, working with performers and MCs, planning transitions and making sure everything came together on the day."
The result was a vibrant performance featuring students from across the school sharing their talents through singing, dancing, drama and live music. More importantly, it gave students a platform to participate, connect with one another and feel a sense of belonging within the Dover Court community.
One of the things families often look for in a school is whether students have opportunities to develop their interests, take initiative and make a meaningful contribution. Experiences like the Expressive Arts Show give students the confidence to do exactly that.

Building Human Skills Beyond the Classroom
Behind the performances was a huge amount of student-led planning and coordination. Working alongside staff, volunteers and performers, Daksh developed valuable skills in leadership, communication and problem-solving.
While academic success remains important, experiences like these help students develop the human skills universities, employers, and communities increasingly value as critical for the future.
"The biggest challenge was managing all the different moving parts at once," he said. "It taught me that you have to stay calm, adapt quickly and keep things moving even when something unexpected happens."
For Daksh, one of the most rewarding moments came during rehearsals and on the day itself, seeing students from different year groups sharing their talents and supporting one another.
"You spend so much time planning individual parts of an event, but when the first performer walks onto the stage, you finally get to see the whole thing working."

A Proud Moment for the Family
Watching from the audience, Daksh's parents saw not only his confidence on stage, but also the growth that happened behind the scenes.
"We always knew Daksh had a flair for public speaking and a natural stage presence," they said. "But watching him truly come into his own, engaging the audience, collaborating with his teammates and taking ownership of the project was incredibly special."
What stood out most was the way he approached leadership.
"He communicated thoughtfully with teammates, volunteers and support staff, and carried himself with humility, kindness and quiet leadership throughout the event."

They believe the experience helped him develop important life skills that extend well beyond school.
"Managing a live show meant dealing with constant moving parts and last-minute changes. Through it all, he learned to adapt, solve problems, collaborate with others and lead with confidence. We hope Daksh continues to embrace opportunities like this at Dover Court, helping him grow into a confident, compassionate, and well-rounded young person."

The Power of Belonging and Student Opportunity
Daksh's story reflects something at the heart of the Dover Court experience: when students feel a sense of belonging, they are empowered to contribute, take initiative, and make a difference.
What began as a chance to perform became an opportunity to create something meaningful for others. By organising the Expressive Arts Show, Daksh not only developed new skills himself but also created a platform for fellow students to share their talents with the wider school community.
Daksh's story is a reminder that excellence is not measured solely by academic outcomes. It is also reflected in the confidence to take initiative, the courage to share ideas and the ability to bring people together around a common goal.
Whether through the arts, sport, service, entrepreneurship or leadership, Dover Court students are encouraged not only to embrace opportunities, but to create them, developing the skills, confidence and character that will support them long after they leave school.
